I surely do not need to remind you of the incredible team of youngsters that Ajax had in the 2017/18 season and how they almost made it to the Champions League final. I also do not need to remind you which players made up that team.
But I will because unfortunately they are not playing for the Dutch side anymore. 22-year old centre-back Matthijs De Ligt moved to Juventus, 24-year old Frenkie De Jong joined Barcelona, Moroccan winger Hakim Ziyech became a European Champion with Chelsea, and also moving to England was midfielder Donny Van De Beek. Still only 24-years old, Van De Beek is considered to be one of the most underrated talents in Europe. Ever since joining Manchester United in the 2020 summer transfer window, Norwegian boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not given him the time of day to prove himself and many are blaming this fact on the 5-0 loss to Liverpool, and for not winning four straight Premier League matches.
During this summer's transfer window, Manchester United signed players such as Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, and were set to be favourites to compete for the Premier League title. They have a team full of strong individuals and on paper this club should be on top of the league competing alongside Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City. But they are not.
Instead they are in 7th, below West Ham, Brighton and Tottenham, who arguably should fear Man United's solid side. Well I take that back, because they did not prove to be solid at all, not only against Liverpool, but previously against Leicester in a shocking 4-2 loss, against Everton in a 1-1 draw and against Aston Villa who are in the second half of the Premier League table but won to United 1-0. Previously to that, they also lost their place in the Caraboa Cup to West Ham. So what is wrong with Ole's first eleven? Are they not good enough? Maybe they do not work well together? Or maybe combined they are a great team but they just need a better leader than Ole? The word on everyone's mouth is Donny Van De Beek. Having started midfielder Fred, many were furious that United have such a player like Van De Beek and is just there sitting on the bench.
Ole will be given another chance before getting sacked with the Red Devils, but will he finally give Van De Beek his chance? If not, they could easily see the Dutch midfielder out of the club during the next transfer window taking place in January.
TalkSport are already reporting that Everton, Newcastle and Barcelona are eyeing up the 24-year old. Everton had previously shown interest in the Dutch during the summer transfer window while Newcastle is considered as an option for many players after their new ownership. Meanwhile, Voetball International reported that Van De Beek got himself a new football agent, Ali Dursun. The agent also represents Martin Braithwaite and Frenkie De Jong, who both play for Barcelona. Considering the fact that the Spanish club is looking to come back from the turmoil that they are going through, Van De Beek can be a good addition to the club, especially with De Jong there. The pair worked great at Ajax. Also, it would be no surprise to see Van De Beek seeking a way out of the club, even if it is on loan maybe. The January transfer window includes a lot of loan deals, and an affordable loan deal for Barcelona is more than welcome. In my opinion, with this rate, Van De Beek will not be wearing the Red shirt for long, not that he wore it that much so far. After the 5-0 loss to Liverpool, he was seen training alone in Old Trafford, and in my opinion a player like that, who is already preparing to face the next battle despite the fact that probably Ole will not choose him, is a player who you would be lucky and ready to fight for to have on your team.
